Water Heater Burst? Shut It Down in This Order
When a tank splits or a fitting lets go, a 40- or 50-gallon heater keeps refilling from the main until you stop it. These steps limit the damage and keep you safe.
Smell gas? Stop here.
Leave the house now. Don’t flip switches or unplug anything. Call your gas utility’s emergency line or 911 from outside.
Step by step
- Stay safe. Keep away from hot water and anything electrical standing in water. If water has reached outlets or the electrical panel area, don’t walk through it.
- Stop the water. Close the cold-water valve on the pipe above the heater. If you can’t reach it or it fails, close the home’s main shutoff, usually where the water line enters the house.
- Cut the energy. Electric: switch off the heater’s breaker. Gas: turn the control knob to OFF and close the gas valve on the supply line.
- Let it cool. Open a hot tap upstairs to relieve pressure. Don’t open the drain valve until the water has cooled.
- Call. Describe what failed and what you have shut off. Then photograph the damage for your records.
Gas vs electric: what is different
| Gas heater | Electric heater | |
|---|---|---|
| Energy shutoff | Control knob to OFF, then close the gas supply valve | Dedicated double-pole breaker in the panel |
| Main hazard | Gas leak, carbon monoxide from a soaked burner or damaged vent | Shock from wet wiring or elements |
| Before restarting | Burner area must be dry; relighting is for the provider | Never power an empty tank; it burns out the elements |
Why bursts happen in Westfield homes
Most sudden failures come from a tank wall that has been corroding for a while, sometimes after warning signs like rusty water, rumbling or a slow bottom leak. Westfield’s very hard water (about 22 grains per gallon, per Citizens Energy Group) builds sediment that wears tanks from the bottom up, and many heaters in homes built around 2010 are now old enough for this. A relief valve that is capped or seized also removes the tank’s last line of protection, which is why the code forbids blocking it.
After the water is off
- Move belongings out of the wet area and start drying with fans if it is safe.
- Check nearby drywall, carpet and the room below for water.
- Leave the heater off until it has been checked. Don’t relight a gas heater that got wet.
Not a burst, just a drip? Compare the bottom-leak guide and the drain valve guide.
